I have been sent details of this fabulous large plate by John Pearson. The decoration looks particularly crisp and detailed and in good condition (although I have not seen it ‘in the flesh’ as it were). A stunning example of Pearson’s ceramic work.

Request for feedback on the site
I have updated the John Pearson fact sheet with quite a few new pages. I would appreciate any feedback on the site you could give – is the site easily naviagable? Does it have the right sort of information? Is there something else you would like to see on the site, or anything removed? Any comments are gratefully received!
Regards
Noel

Updating site
I have been revising the site and will shortly upload the new pages. I am particularly grateful to centuryofdesign.com for some fabulous examples of metalwork and, particularly ceramics. The site is coming on quite well as a resource for John Pearson examples and I will be adding a couple of chargers courtesy of David Morris and Richard Wintertons auctioneers.

John Pearson’s production
John Pearson pattern numbers
I have added a new section to the site showing pieces bearing pattern numbers. It seems that Pearson produced about 400 pieces a year from around 1889 to 1894 (assuming a strict chronological numbering which seems generally accepted). His level of production seems to have fallen off. Between 1895 and 1900 he seems to have produced about 50 numbered pieces a year. Between 1900 and 1903 he seems to have produced about 500 pieces. Of course, these are only the pieces bearing pattern numbers. If you have any pieces I can put on the site (anonymously or not) please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thanks Noel
There was an interesting charger on eBay dating from 1889 (the same year as the box/casket on the site). I don’t have pictures since eBay does not allow non-members to contact sellers (if the seller or buyer wants to send in images I would love to put them on the site). However, the charger, which was signed and dated and had a pattern number, was decorated with leaves and tendrils which seems typical of Pearson’s early work.

Fish image from 1899
This is a detailed image from a signed Pearson charger from 1899 (with full signature and pattern number). This appears very different (to my less knowledgeable eye) to Newlyn pieces which I have seen, and very much in the fantastic world of De Morgan or even William Burgess. If you have any pieces from 1899 (or any other years) please email – or upload on the wordpress blog – and I would love to use them on the site to build up a picture of his work.

Happy New Year
A New Year. This year I want to develop the site further – with more information and images of Pearson’s work, and that of his contemporaries.
